Intricacy, Passion & Empowerment: A Conversation With Jewelry Designer Rama Ayyappan
Words by Dhivyaa Chelvan
For most of her childhood, Rama wanted to be an engineer. Once she accomplished that dream, and though she was doing great, she dabbled in art on the side. While juggling between her commitments as a project lead and a mom, Rama began to start making jewelry simply with a passion to match her outfits with accessories. Undeniably talented, her reputation has spread among her friends and what started as a hobby turned into a serious jewelry brand.
Inspired by quilling, Rama created a line for every girl-on-the-go. Intricate, unique and feminine, Quilling Frenzy allows to customize just about anything and everything- while still being environmentally responsible.
Name: Quilling Frenzy ; Designer: Rama Ayyappan
Who is the ideal 'Quilling Frenzy' customer?
Anyone who loves to wear unique customized jewelry. An ideal customer is someone who loves to go with the rhythm behind a piece of jewelry and enjoy collecting them as they wear it.
Did you always want to be a jewelry designer?
Not really. I always wanted to be a Software engineer. In retrospect, I have always had something for myself apart from my day job. I used to try different art for hobby and since when I started making jewelry, I have stuck to it even though I have moved from one type of jewelry to another.
Do you have any formal training in art or jewelry design?
None at all. I never studied jewelry design and when I tried quilling for the first time, I felt like I discovered the language of art. I am self-taught. I learn the techniques online to make jewelry in a style I love.
What influences your creations?
A whole lot of things – People, nature, colors, designs, patterns- there are way too many things to list (wink). Sometimes it’s the medium itself- as I try to do something that accentuates the colors, curves and shape of the stone, I never quite know how they might turn out, and I have surprised myself in the past.
Describe your typical day
I’m constantly on the move. My mornings are mostly for home (my husband and my mother has been my biggest support at home). Then I head to my work where I’m a Project lead at iNautix Technologies, India. I finish my day with my passion- I try to spend at least one hour per day at my work bench. It could be a new product, making a to-do list, organizing the materials, watching tutorials for a new technique or just making something new.
What is next for Quilling Frenzy?
It surely has evolved over time and will continue to. Quilling was an eye-opener for me to art and it was exhilarating to try something totally new. I always have a drive to explore this art- from paper quilling to paper-based products, cabochon jewelry, to the most recent collection of wire jewelry. There are hundreds of areas in art to explore and I would love to do as much as I can.
